Clean sweep for Tsumawi (Malaymail Aug 8th)
|
|
THE phenomenon that is Mawi, did what was expected of him and graduated top of his class for ‘Akademi Fantasia’ III after a landslide win in the final on Saturday night.
Not only did he ace his final assignments, he did it in style, equalling his own record of the highest percentage ever to be charted by a single student in Akademi Fantasia history with a staggering 58 per cent of the votes. Apart from that, his convincing crowd-pleasers, the cover of Seroja and the original composition, Aduh Saleha, also earned him the newly introduced Best Vocal Performance title with 38 per cent of the votes as well as the Best Performance prize with 46 per cent of the votes.
His closest competition, Felix, only took 30 per cent of the votes.
Third placed Amylea and fourth placed Marsha never stood a chance at all, scoring eight per cent and four per cent respectively.
In figures, the win might have registered a slide in terms of actual numbers, but there was no denying the overwhelming success of the Kulai-born Mawi.
The show began with Felix performing Datuk Sharifah Aini’s Kudaku Lari with an interestingly fresh and different arrangement. The rocking performance had a few flaws which were camouflaged by the frantic pace of the song. However, it was obvious he was grappling with his tempo and his breathing.
Amylea came on next with the first original composition of the night from Adnan Abu Hassan, Ku Berserah. Her fine delivery proved her ability to handle an original, and also her deftness in belting out covers with a touch of her own style. Her explosive performance set the bar high early into the show. Sadly enough, the song did not seem tailored for her. While the weepy lyrics may have touched a nerve within her, the song itself didn’t seem to strike a chord with Amylea’s personality.
Marsha was up next with her cover of Manusia, made to sound bigger than either the Saloma or Sheila Majid versions. Indeed her approach gave the song a fresh lease of life. Vocally, she did quite well, though she seemed occasionally distracted by the need to keep up with the choreography.
The crowd roared in approval not only before Mawi began his take of the S.Effendi/Jamal Abdillah Seroja, but also after he nailed the tune. There was little to gripe about about his performance as he rose to the occasion, backed by the National Choir.
If Amylea didn’t seem to get along with her debut single, Felix too appeared less than comfortable with Warkah Berlalu Pilu, composed by (Adnan Abu Hassan and Fariz). The comment by Syafinaz on the need to carefully choose the appropriate key, was something he should have remembered. After all, Felix had clearly shown his discomfort over that in the earlier rounds. Still, it was a valiant effort that scored in terms of confidence, if not in terms of presentation quality.
Amylea provided what must have been the night’s highlight for many with Guns ‘N Roses’ Sweet Child O’ Mine. It was probably familiar territory considering her club-land past and the Langkawi lass turned it on just enough, without falling into the trap of sounding like just another performance by a Filipino band.
However, it was a tear-jerker for all the wrong reasons when Marsha belted her new song for the night in Untuk Terakhir Kali written by Sharon Paul and Mohariz Yaakub. Early on in her performance, she had again commited the same offence of forgetting the lyrics. It was deja vu as she did the same thing last week.
It was saving the best for last when Mawi came on with M. Nasir and Loloq’s Aduh Saleha. Of the original compositions presented for the night, it was the only catchy and infectious tune, and more importantly was delivered by Mawi extremely well. The song appeared a very tailored piece of work – and was perhaps the only original composition for the night which served to showcase the singer’s strengths.
While some may have rued Mawi’s clean sweep, he undoubtedly delivered the kind of performance deserving of a champion.
QUOTES FROM THE FINAL FOUR
MAWI
On his following :
"I’m overwhelmed by the recognition, and I feel really blessed. I was caught off-guard, and I don’t believe that I’m as good as some of my fans seem to think. But I will work hard and be the best that I can."
On his availability:
"Yes, I have a fiancee, and I admit I am engaged. It was a ‘suka sama suka’ thing, and I have to admit our families are not that consenting over our relationship."
On fidelity:
"I am loyal to her (his fiancee)... no matter what temptations lie ahead. But I most probably will not bring her around and I’m not worried about the reaction of fans that I’m already spoken for."
On him constantly dominating the polls:
"I’ve really cared about the results of the polls. Whether my percentage was high or not, I didn’t really care. I didn’t feel guilty about it though... I just didn’t feel anything. For me, it was up to whoever who voted for me to decide my fate."
On the pressure of keeping up his clean cut and religious image:
"I am who I am. I’m not that innocent. I’m not that ‘nice’. What you see is what you get."
AMYLEA
On Mawi constantly dominating the charts:
"It didn’t kill my spirit. I shared the joy, and took pride in his achievements. It was all an experience which exposed us to another level of experience."
On emotional baggage and the bond between the students:
"During the final weeks, we had developed a stronger bond. No matter what problems came our way, we all confronted it, and came to terms with whatever we faced."
On not placing in the top two:
"Well, I’m just thankful to have even had the opportunity to come this far and I really don’t see anything to gripe about."
FELIX
On voting by State:
"No, I don’t believe there exists such sentiments. At the end of the day, I believe that Akademi Fantasia has blurred the lines of who we are or where we’re from."
On jibes and stereotypes deemed offensive to East Malaysians:
"It’s hardly that important to be taken seriously."
On being best buds with Mawi:
"He’s easy going and cool to be with. He’s humorous and just a riot to be with."
MARSHA
On jibes and stereotypes deemed offensive to East Malaysians:
"We don’t take offence with the jibes – and we take it all in good fun. A joke is a joke."
On religion, sensitivities and her hair colour:
"I’m a Seventh Day Adventist. There’re lots of don’ts in my religion which a lot of people are not aware of. I can’t eat seafood like prawns, crab, and squid. But I can eat fish but only certain types of fish. And I can’t wear earrings. As for having my hair coloured for the final, well... it’s not really allowed in my religion. I have no further comment on what’s kosher and what’s not."
On being labeled sexy:
"I can take it as a compliment – but only if it’s meant in a good way."

The epicentre of Mawi-mania (Malaymail Aug 7th)
|
 |
|
Mawi bersalam dengan peminat selepas dinobatkan JUARA AF3
|
|
|
Life will never be the same again at the once-sleepy agricultural settlement of Felda Taib Andak, or for its home-grown son, Asmawi Ani.
As the reality show barrelled towards its frenzied climax, villagers pulled out all the stops to support their hot favourite. To call them fanatical Mawi fans is an understatement. It seems as if all social activity in the settlement these days revolves around Mawi-mania. From last Friday reporters were as common a sight as Mawi posters, and the villagers were getting pretty savvy at fielding questions from the Press and posing for the mandatory photographs holding up Mawi banners.
But Sabahan Felix was said to be nipping at Mawi’s heels, and some say, may even pull off an upset.
So what if the unthinkable were to happen? What if Mawi lost? That question hardly seemed to feature in the minds of Mawi’s fanatical following here.
“Don’t know about that. All I can say is that the whole settlement is crazy over him. No-one is going to be home tonight. We are all going to be at the Padang, rooting for him,” said mother-of-four Siti Zaharah Alif, 37.
The Padang refers to the settlement’s public field, where 5,000 fans were expected to view the finals on a specially-set up big screen. The Sultan of Johor’s daughter – Tunku Muna Najiah Sultan Iskandar – was planning to lead a busload of MAWAR (the Johor Ladies Association) members to be among the cheering fans.
“I think it almost doesn’t matter who wins. Mawi is a phenomenon. His star is on the ascendant, and there is no turning back now,” said village headman Mohd Hanafiah Hussein, 58, a soft-spoken, rather conservative man with a steady temperament. Hanafiah has observed the swirling tide of Mawi frenzy that has gripped the village over these past months, and has taken it all in his stride.
“In terms of star quality, Mawi is already in the same league as Siti Nurhaliza and Jamal Abdillah. He has made his name,” Hanafiah observed philosophically.
He said the Kulai Municipal Council had tried to book Mawi to perform at a Merdeka Day festivity on August 16, but was politely told that Mawi would have to refer to the Akademi Fantasia management first, as he was “uncertain about his schedule”.
“I guess we will have to get in line from now on, and book an appointment to meet him,” said Hanafiah with a chuckle. “I am very happy for him, for his whole family. I am glad one of our people has made good.”
What is the appeal of this Felda boy, who until a few months ago was considering a career as a bilal (mosque clergyman)? Until he stepped onto the AF stage, Mawi led a life that was extraordinary in its ordinary-ness. Even the house he grew up in seems more humble than that of his neighbours. Most people here remember him as the “nasyid boy”. Nasyid is a big thing in Felda settlements. In Taib Andak alone there are no less than 10 groups. Even as a child, Mawi had a good voice. Nothing out of this world, but a good voice that assured him a place in any nasyid group he vied for.
Hanafiah’s daughter Rohani, 24, was his classmate in secondary school and remembers him well. “He was quiet and subdued when in unfamiliar company. But once he warmed up to you, he would open up. He was quite a joker, good company. But he was always religious, something that is obvious even in his choice of music now. Even at a tender age, he read the Quran beautifully,” she remembers.
After his SPM, Mawi became a teacher and trainer to nasyid groups. He also served as a junior religious teacher for a while, and for extra cash he moonlighted as a DJ at a large restaurant near the settlement. Still, his religious bent never left him. Indeed, among the stories told about Mawi is that thanks to his good voice, he had been offered the job of bilal of the local mosque. But the offer coincided with the AF call-up, so he turned down the bilal offer and packed his bags for Kuala Lumpur. The rest is history.
Today, it seems as if there is no stopping the Mawi juggernaut. The Mawi Fan Club reportedly has thousands of on-line members. There are Mawi T-shirts, buttons, banners and bunting. He even has the royal family rooting for him. Hanafiah, who you can tell is just not one to be swept up in the whole pop culture thing, is quite understanding about the forces at work here.
“Mawi used to be just one of the boys around here, and today he is a national phenomenon. And he did it without compromising the values he grew up with. He has crossed over into the field of popular culture, but the villagers here are still able to identify with him because he is as humble and no less religious than when he left here. He has remained true to himself, and to the values he grew up with.”
And that is why every villager here, from the village youths on the ubiquitous motorbikes to the Mak Chik with the child strapped to her hips, was planning to descend on the Padang to cheer their idol on.

Fans of mawi, Feliz take 'War' to the net (Malaymail Aug 5th)

|
Fans r locked in a ‘psychological war’ over who deserves 2 win
|
|
|
With the finals just two days away, fans of Akademi Fantasia finalists Asmawi Ani (Mawi) and Felix Agus are locked in a psychological war.
MawiFC.net carried postings from worried fans of Mawi that Felix is now ahead of their idol in SMS votes which would decide the outcome of the show.
“Until yesterday afternoon, the percentage of votes went up for a moment at Astro’s Channel@15. My mom told me that Felix is ahead at 39 per cent and Mawi at 34 per cent. My aunt said the same thing, so it must be true,” posted one Amidala.
The tempo escalated, as rumours raged like wildfire.
The biggest target is Felix — Mawi’s closest competitor. Several Mawi fans even speculated that Felix’s pole position was due to ‘outside forces’ at work.
“Don’t be surprised with Felix’s rise in votes. I heard timber tycoons are sponsoring (prepaid) reload coupons to vote for Felix, not to mention Sabah millionaires who are giving handouts to Felix’s fans,” posted Big Joe.
“If this is the case, we can never fight them.”
This rumour was compounded by other forum members in different threads. One of them was titled ‘Gempar — RM2 juta untuk undi Felix.’ (Shocking—RM 2 million to vote for Felix).
“There are businessmen and organisations from Sabah raising RM2 million to vote for Felix,” posted mimalifwauya.
“So don’t slack off, keep on voting for Mawi, don’t make him a victim of the situation. Spread this to everyone. Don’t chat anymore at Channel 15, and don’t vote for Marsha or Amylea. We must unite and continue our fight to lift Mawi as champion. WORLD!!!”
Some fans at MawiFC, though, remain sceptical of the rumours.
“It would be better if they just give the RM2 million to Felix,” posted Julianaharraz.
“The main prize is a Suzuki Swift, which is less than RM100,000. The house is also around RM200,000. So if Felix’s fans really do have RM2 million, they might as well just give it to him. Unless they’re really stupid businessmen.”
Yet there are still those with enough fiery emotions to cause some concern.
“It’s not logical. Mawi has been leading for nine weeks, and now in just two days, Felix can overtake him!. This Astro programme is so illogical,” posted gooddevil73.
Things in Felix’s camps are pretty happening too.
A visit to The Official Felix Agus Fan Club (FAF) website reveals that instead of getting worried about rumours, Felix fans are taking more calculated measures to ensure their idol would defy the odds and emerge the winner of Akademi Fantasia 3. A fan, Neo-S, came up with a detailed breakdown of population statistics in Sabah (the state Felix hails from) and the rest of Malaysia to predict how many votes are needed to oust Mawi. On top of the statistics, Neo-S also came up with a 10-point strategy, among which is to encourage those who don’t own a handphone to buy RM10, RM20, RM30 or more reload cards and borrow a handphone from any possible source.
On top of the ‘brilliant’ suggestions, we also came across some that are pretty original. ZaChi-ZaTaN, one of the FAF forum members suggested applying for the post of vote tabulator at Astro’s main offices.
“That way, we can reject all votes that go to Mawi, or transfer everything to Felix’s account.”
Some fans of the show, however, have voiced concern that the legions of Mawi and Felix fanatics could cause some problems during the finals this Saturday.
Amin_al_Kalam, at Cari.com.my, wrote, “I am excited to go to the finals. At the same time, I am worried for my safety because I’m sure that fans of both Mawi and Felix will go all out to make sure their ‘team’ wins.”
